Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is crucial if you want your website to be easily found on the web. You must also understand the importance of organic traffic for your website. The good thing about this is that people land on your site with a sense of trust.

If they think that you’re listed on Google page 1 or page 2 for doing something good, they will think that your website is worthy to be visited, so they land on your site with a good feeling and they often go through and do more.

If you do the work and spend time building a library of good content on your website and driving lots of organic traffic, Google will just keep sending you more and more (traffic). The whole thing can snowball and all of a sudden, you’ll get thousands of visitors a day.

However, you need to understand that it’s a long-term investment of writing good content in your site. If you are not going to be in this business in the long term, then huge investment in search engine optimisation may not be the right strategy for your particular business.

For your SEO to take effect, here are a couple of things you should do to your website:

Stage 1 – Take Care of the Technical Stuff

Download the Google Guide to Search Engine Optimisation. There is some technical stuff in there that you need to get right. If you don’t understand the document, you need to take it to your developer and sit down with him.

Your developer is someone who fully understands the guide and can go through the whole thing with you. Make sure to follow that guide. Your website should also comply with Google’s guidelines.

Also, make sure that your website is fully responsive to mobile devices. Your website should change its design to sit nicely on a mobile so you can read it without pinching and grabbing up a text.

Stage 2 – Find the Right Content for your Website

Once you have the technically correct website, the next stage in search engine optimisation is having good content. Go to the back of Google AdWords, there’s a keyword tool there that you can download. Use this tool to find out what people are searching for around your niche.

If, for example, those people are searching for internet marketing topics, you can write a blog about it and you can get free traffic from Google every day for that search term. Visitors may go around your website trying to find out more about that topic.

Each blog or article on a page needs to be at least 500 words of good copy. It needs to be good quality content that people will find engaging and interesting. Use your social media channels to advertise that content. You can put down a few lines on Facebook or LinkedIn and link it back to your website.

SEO is about taking care of your website so that search engines will know that you are following their rules. In return, they will reward you with lots of visitors that could become loyal customers of your business.
